Our Parsha this Shabbos is Parashas Mishpatim.
In this Parsha, we learn about the Laws of a bondman and woman, murder, bodily injury and death caused by an animal, stealing, laws of the Shomrim (the one in whose care an article is placed),a man who seduces a virgin, what to do to a sorceress and one who involves themselves in bestiality, how to care for others, how to be a Judge, the Laws of Shabbos to keep wherever a Jew is and the Laws of Sabbaticals that must be kept in the Land of Israel, the Three Pilgrimage Festivals, the forbidding of idol-worship and how to treat any forms of evil idol-worship. The Children of Israel, then acknowledge to HaShem that we will do and obey HaShem and then Moshe is called up to the Mountain to fetch the Ten Commandments.
This Parsha is heartily filled with Mishpatim - Ordinances to ensure every part of living is according to good and moral ways.
Keeping Yiddishkeit is not just a religion, but a complete way of life. To be a Jew is to be the Torah. Not just to read it and study it, but to become The Torah. We learn the Torah in order to understand and know and keep,HaShem's Will, but understanding Torah comes after following the Torah Laws, for to truly show HaShem we love Him,is to do as He Asks, with no personal gain, not even our own personal satisfaction of knowing all the Why's.It is enough to know that G-D Said so and G-D Knows all and G-D Created all and thus G-D is to be trusted without question. Our mind and intellect are on such a low level that we can never ever comprehend the entire picture. We only see a minute part of it that is our own surroundings. Only HaShem Sees all and so,what HaShem Tells us to do, unlike our own limited level that can only see our present experience,HaShem incorporates all things and everyone,a feat , only HaShem can perform. Thus only G-D can know what we must and should do.
Our Parsha starts by saying, ' Ve ' Eileh Ha Mishpatim Asher Tasim Lifneihem,' - 'And these are the Ordinances that you shall place before them.' HaShem instructed Moshe to put these Laws before us, starting with the Jewish Bondman, showing that all people have equal value and the smallest in status is just as important as the one who leads.
It is interesting that to note that HaShem doesn't just tell Moshe,' These are the Ordinances that I give you to give them,' but HaShem directly uses the word ,'Lifneihem,' which means 'before them.' HaShem asks that the Ordinances be not just given to us, but be placed before us. Before us on every step we are going to travel, every word we are going to utter, every action of Holiness we will be called upon to do, by the choices of good that will be presented to us. Thus the Ordinances, must be the road and path on which we 'will' walk .Not just on the road that we are on right now, but Torah Law teaches us to plan for our future so that we all end up at the right destination and that is under HaShem and close to HaShem .Torah Law must be to us the lighthouse that leads us through the stormy seas that may come our way Chas Ve Shalom and thus lead us home to HaShem . So, Torah which is compared to a Light, is our true guide to life. If we always stick to Torah principles, then no matter what, we will always be headed in the right direction ' Lifneihem,' - 'Before us .'We must forever keep HaShem Before us in everything that comes our way and in every step we make and take.
HaShem Asked Moshe to put before us the Ordinances and although Moshe passed long ago, his ideals and spirit remains with us in every word of Torah we study and do, for HaShem gave us the Torah through Moshe.
HaShem also instructed Moshe to put the Ordinances 'before' us for within that ideal, if the Torah is always before us,it means that we are studying it all the time ,not just to do it, but study it too and understand it , delving deeply into it,,and so is spoken of as it must be always before our eyes.If we keep HaShem and His Torah forever before us, we will not come into the grip of aveirah. We will be able to sail our ship home toward the lighthouse of Light of HaShem, Who is at the end of our pathway ,for it is there that we will find HaShem.
Each Mishpat-Ordinance , takes us up higher spiritually toward HaShem .This is hinted at,in the first two words of this Parsha, which says,' Ve ' Eileh Ha Mishpatim,' for the word 'Eileh,' also has within it, the word 'Aleh,' which means' To rise or go up spiritually toward G-D .' So ,keeping the Mishpatim allows us to go up toward HaShem .
Within the word 'Mishpatim,' is the word ' Shofet,' which means 'Judge,' for HaShem wants us to be our own Judge that keeps ourselves in order and sees that we keep HaShem's Laws with love. Thus we are to be our own control to keep us on the Torah Road to G-D .
The 'Ve' at the beginning means 'And,' which shows that the thought just before this in Torah, is related to this new thought , to which the word 'Ve' is put before. The words before this Parsha, spoke of Tznius and being modest when walking up toward the Altar of HaShem, thus ascending closer to HaShem and this Parsha of Mishpatim continues this ideal, by letting us know that the Mishpatim - Ordinances, are a continuation of our journey toward HaShem and the only way to get to HaShem.
Keeping the Mishpatim, is a total act of love for G-D . Show G-D how much and how deeply you love Him, by changing your whole life from this moment on, and travel toward HaShem with love, through His Instructions of how to get to Him which are his Laws, as the only way to come up to HaShem.
'Ve' eileh Ha Mishpatim,' - 'These are the Ordinances that HaShem Put through Moshe, before each and every one of us,then, now and into the future - His Laws are Eternal.Follow them and come home to HaShem.
With love to HaShem, I wish HaShem with love, a Beautiful Sweet Shabbos Kodesh with love and to all , a beautiful sweet Shabbos Kodesh with love.
