Today is Tu B'Av , the 15th of Av . This day is a semi Yom Tov day , a day for great happiness and rejoicing . It was on this day in history , that we realized that The Decree Fom HaShem , that we stop dying , after the incident of the Spies , came to an end . Every year on the 9th of Av , the people over 20 had to lie in their graves in the Wilderness and would die , due to the decree of us being punished for us not having Faith In HaShem , when the Spies returned and brought an evil report of Israel . This decree continued till the last year we were in the Wilderness . On that last year , the people went to lie in their graves and woke up the next morning . They wondered and thought maybe they had miscalculated the wrong day , so the next night they did the same and found that they were still alive . They continued to do this for the next few nights and by the 15th of Av , they realized by the full moon , that they could not have miscalculated the day and so realized That HaShem Had Cancelled The Decree and so it became a day of great rejoicing . It was also on this day that the ban placed on the twelve Tribes , when they entered Eretz Yisrael forbidding them to intermarry with other Tribes , was lifted and so , the vow taken on the Tribe of Binyamin ( who were almost extinct ) , prohibiting them from taking wives from the other Tribes , was lifted . Also on this day , Hosheah ben Eilah , the last king of the Ten Tribes , finally removed the border guards ( set up by the infamous Yeravam ben Nevat 300 years before ) , thus allowing people to go to Yerushalayim on Pesach , Shavuot and Succot . There was also at the time , the " Tavor Maggol , ' - ' The breaking of the Hatchet ' as it was called , where up to the 15th of Av , they would cut wood for the Mizbeach Altar , but from this date , it was no longer done as the days began to get cooler , causing an increase in wormy wood , which could not be used on the Mizbeach and so there was more time for Torah Study . On this day , the dead of the city of Betar , whose blood the Romans had used for manure for three years for their vineyards , were finally allowed to be buried and were found miraculously not to have decomposed . Ahavas Torah Centre Luach - Rabbi E Chrysler . On this day and onwards , one should study more Torah at night And So Will HaShem Respond By Adding more years to one's life . It also became a day when women would go out into the field and dress in each other's garments , to meet a suitor and so the suitor would judge them on their own terms and thus both would meet each other on humble terms . So it became a great day for weddings and proposing . So To HaShem and all my fellow Jews , a Sweet And Happy Tu B'Av , Sameach With Love .
