Our Parsha this Shabbos is Parashas Yisro, the Sedra that contains the Ten Pronouncements ( The Ten Commandments ) . As many Sedras do, this Sedra starts with a 'Va,' which means 'And,' and thus shows a continuing link with the Sedra before, where HaShem Helped with the defeat of Amalek and this was the final deciding factor for Yisro to become a Ger Tzeddek to Yiddishkeit . Yisro , Moshe's Father-In-Law, had been a priest of Midian, and had tried every religion there was to try, and finally came to the true realization, that only HaShem is G-D , and that only He, Created Creation . This was one of the greatest Kiddush HaShem , for when Yisro converted to Yiddishkeit after trying every religion there was to try, it proved to all nations , that only HaShem is G-D and only His Torah and Tanach is True . It is written in the Sedra in the first verse, how first, he was a priest of Midyan, and then the Father In Law of Moshe , thus Moshe's Neshoma already started to influence him to the truth of HaShem .
Yisro really had tried all the religions and found everything but Yiddishkeit, false and so, he and his family had been ostracized by his fellow Midyanim. Yisr had other names by which he was known, like Reuel, Yeter and others and he was a man of standing, who was an adviser to Pharaoh . Now, Yisro, was coming to Moshe . HaShem So Respects the Jewish Orthodox Convert, who takes on HaShem's Torah , and turns away from falsehood and family and friends who follow the wrong path , that Yisro was honored to have The Ten Commandments, in his Sedra.
Yisro had heard of the Miraculous saving of our people from Egypt Mitzrayim, a place no one gets out from, and this woke Yisro up . When Yisro heard how HaShem Opened the Yam Suf for us ( a Miracle Publicized by the splitting of other waters around the World, for which people asking Bilaam what is this Miracle, got told that HaShem is Splitting the Sea for His People , the same as when they asked Bilaam, when we were receiving the Ten Commandments, Bilaam said that HaShem is Giving His Laws to His people ) , Yisro could not deny, the special place we as Jews had , with HaShem . But at the defeating of Amalek ( an ally of Midyan ) , there was now no doubt , that HaShem Is Truly With us Jews . So Yisro, took Tzipporah and Moshe's two sons Gershom and Eliezer and came to the outside of the Clouds of Glory. He shot an arrow in, and though messages were usually locked out from hurting us, this one, HaShem Permitted , and Yisro's letter fell just before Moshe, who permitted him entry. Moshe told Yisro of The Wonders of HaShem's Saving Miracles for us , and Yisro, after HaShem Permitted him to, telling Moshe to trust Yisro's motives, Yisro became a true Ger Tzeddek . In honor of this, HaShem Allowed a piece of Mannah to drop down at the feast table in front of Yisro .
The following day, Yisro saw how Moshe sat from morning till night judging all the people without a rest and advised Moshe to choose men of accomplishment, G-D fearing people , men of truth , people who despise money , and to appoint leaders of thousands, leaders of hundreds, leaders of fifties and leaders of tens, to judge the people , and the major matters, to be brought to Moshe. Yisro waited for acknowledgment from HaShem that it would be ok by HaShem, and so it was.Moshe listened and Yisro left for his home in peace .
In the Third Month, after leaving Mitzrayim, the Children of Israel , arrived at the Wilderness of Sinai , and encamped opposite the Mountain .
HaShem Gave Instructions on how they were to prepare for HaShem To Come Down To Meet the people . Har Sinai, was chosen , even though other Mountains wanted to be the Mountain on which , HaShem Came Down on , for Har Sinai, was the most humble of mountains, and also , unlike the other Mountains that wanted this position, HaShem Told them that unlike the other Mountains, no idols had been served on pure and humble Har Sinai. .The people had to prepare for the Third Day, on which HaShem Would Come Down. The word ' Sinai,' breaks down to "S'neh," with an added Yud . The word "S'neh," means " Thornbush," for it was on this Mountain, HaShem Appeared to Moshe in the Thornbush.The added Yud, with a Gematrical Value of Ten,refers to the Ten Commandments ( The basis of Laws for our World ) Given on this Mountain. ( Rokeach and also Midrash Says - Shemos - R. Weissman ) . The word "Sinai, " also has in it , the word ' S'in," which refers to a mountain peak as well as the word 'Sanin,' which means " Study and Repeat," for We are to continually study Torah and Repeat our learning with all its interpretations, and repeat it by practicing the Laws. This Mountain had various other names, like 'Kadeish," a reference to its holiness, for on it , HaShem Came Down . HaShem Held the Mountain over our heads, showing the importance to follow the Commandments of HaShem , that they are our very life and future . We , unlike any other nation that was offered HaShem's Torah were the only ones who first said , " We will do and then we will listen , " for we trusted HaShem without having to question the content of His Laws .
On the Third Day, the people were awoken to great thunder and lighting and heavy cloud on the mountain, and the loud sound of the Shofar and Moshe brought the people to meet HaShem, Who Descended in Smoke and Fire, while the Shofar sound got louder and Moshe spoke , and HaShem Answered him With A Voice .
HaShem at first, Gave all the Commandments at once , in one instant, in a way that each person there could understand it the same way, even to the level of each person's understanding, so that each person would have the same comprehension. With it, came the Oral understanding of the Oral Law . A feat, only HaShem Could Perform . Then HaShem Directly Gave the first two Commandments, and it came so powerfully, that the people's souls actually left their bodies. HaShem had to bring them back to life again, with the Dew of Resurrection, that will be used at Techias Ha Meisim, The Resurrection of the Dead, in Moshiach's time . The people begged Moshe to rather relate The Commandments,for they were not on the same level as Moshe, to be able to Stand HaShem's Voice, even at a very soft level . Every Jew was there at the Giving of the Ten Commandments, past present and future, even Jews still to come in generations later, and also those who would become Gairim to Torah Orthodox Yiddishkeit.
The Ten Pronouncements , were given where the first five, were between HaShem and us and the last five , were between people and other people . HaShem Gave us directly these Commandments, Appearing To us To Also Keep The Fear of Him, Forever with us .
Seeing that HaShem's Voice cannot be contained and halted by anything, His Voice does not reverberate back on coming into contant with a solid object, for It Is Beyond Powerful and nothing can hold it and thus Has no echo . His Voice from that day, Continues To Travel Through the ages , HaShem Being Beyond Eternal, thus , HaShem's Voice Is Still Talking to us from then .
HaShem also Instructed us not to build an Altar with iron implements. , for iron is used to make weapons and thus detracts from peace and atonement, and an altar, for atonement should be a place to make peace between HaShem and us .The Altar may only be where HaShem Allows it to be built and one is not to ascend HaShem's Altar on steps, for large strides lead to the possibility that a part of the body may be shown Chas Ve Shalom . The Altar must be a place of holiness and the Kohanim used to walk up very slowly , on a ramp.
So ends our Parsha.
The Haftorah for this Sedra is in Isaiah 6:1 - 7:6 and 9:5-6 , and also refers to A Revelation of HaShem .
The sweet idea, that HaShem Would Put such a momentous occasion , as His Revelation to His Beloved People and a part of His Creation, in the Sedra of Yisro, a Ger Tzeddek, a Convert to Torah Orthodox Judaism, shows HaShem's Love for one who comes to Judaism, in pure and honest faith and motives . HaShem Respects the Faith that a person, would turn from all they wrongly knew, to openly admit the truth that HaShem Truly Is G-D , Creator of Creation .
Such a person , is very beloved to HaShem , and HaShem Respects their courage and love of Him and What is True . Like Avraham, who turned away from all he was brought up with , and "Lech Lecha ," - " Went out ," from his family and all that was familiar, to travel the True Road of Pure Faith in HaShem . What could be sweeter.
The Parsha starts by saying ," VaYishma Yisro ," - " And Yisro Heard." Yisro had tried many wrong ways, and finally , Yisro listened and heard HaShem . Within the word 'Vayishma," is the word , " Shem," - " Name," in reference to The True HaShem , and not the other fake and false idols of the World.Thus , Yisro had tried many idols with many names , and finally , he realized The One and Only True HaShem , HaShem's love and control of the Universe, through the Miracles HaShem Had Performed for His people. The True G-D , is HaShem, that is His Name . Finally , Yisro heard HaShem , as Master and Creator of all things, The Only One, Who Has Power over all aspects of His Creation , as He Showed , with our Saving from Mitzrayim, The Splitting of the Yam Suf and the Defeat of Amalek . Now " VaYishma Yisro ," - " Yisro Heard .' The words " VaYishma Yisro ," comes to 1042 in Gematriah which breaks down to 1+ 0 + 4 + 2 = 7 , the number of the Gematrical value of Moshiach . In Moshiach's time , all will realize that only HaShem is G-D and that many of the world have followed false deities that HaShem Forbids . Thus , in Moshiach's time , the World will " Vayishma," - " Hear ," the True G-D HaShem and Worship Him Only . What a Powerful Love , HaShem Has for the Ger Tzeddek , the true Convert to Torah Orthodox Judaism . The word " Yisro ," has within it , the word ' Yoter,' which means ' More ,' thus , there is always ' More ' to learn and more to gain , and the path toward HaShem , is Beyond infinite , and so , one should never stop learning HaShem's Torah .
Yisro finally realized , that HaShem is G-D , the one and only , as our Yidden knew since the beginning , and continue to acknowledge , when we say during each day , the Shema , a few times , "Shema Yisrael HaShem Elokeinu , HaShem Echad ," - " Hear O Israel , HaShem Is our G-D , HaShem Is One . "
This is an acknowledgement said by every Orthodox Torah Jew every day , and such a type of acknowledgement given by every Ger when they convert . Such was the acknowledgement made by Yisro, the holy Ger Tzeddek . May the time come in our days, when the whole World stands up and says out loud the True Truth that HaShem , He Is One , The One And Only Creator .
