Parashas Vayishlach

Our Parsha this Shabbos is Parashas Vayishlach.
In the previous Parsha, Yaakov left Lavan in Charan and headed home after twenty years of not seeing his Father and Mother.
Yaakov knew his brother Eisav was still angry and in this Parsha of Vayishlach, Yaakov prepares to meet him . The Parsha starts by telling us that Yaakov sent Malachim Angels to Eisav with a specific message of how Yaakov had sojourned with Lavan, so as to let Eisav be aware that Yaakov had overcome such an evil and powerful negative man spiritually, so Yaakov could easily overcome Eisav . Yaakov also sent a gift to appease his brother. Thus , Yaakov taught us that we are to do three things when faced with our enemy that hates us. First we are to beg for mercy from HaShem, send tribute to the person who might want to hurt us so as to appease them and should there still be a threat, then we are to prepare for war to defend ourselves.
The Malachim returned to Yaakov to let him know, that his brother, who was busy with something else, on hearing that Yaakov was headed his way, would come out to him in war with four hundred men.
Yaakov divided his camp into two factions , so that if Eisav would strike the one Chas Ve Shalom , then at least the other would get away. Yaakov begged HaShem for Help.
On the way to meet his brother, Yaakov came to the Ford of the Jabbok . He sent over his wives and sons first and then his possessions . While Yaakov was on the first side of the Ford , after his family had crossed over, and when he came back for his possessions, he met a man on the one side, who asked him to help with the man's possessions if the man would help him . Yaakov , a man of his word, agreed and suddenly the man transported Yaakov's things almost instantly , returning, and asking Yaakov now to help with the man's things . Yaakov did, and then returned to find suddenly more things of the man's to help with. Yaakov again helped and strangely enough, after returning, suddenly more things appeared that weren't there before . Yaakov again ran across with the man's things only to return again to find more things back again .Yaakov asked the man if he was a magician, and an argument started between them .This argument turned physical, and they wrestled all night . The man was not a man, but an Angel, the Angel Samael of Edom . The Angel saw he could not overcome Yaakov, so he injured Yaakov's Hip-Socket . This fight with Edom's Angel that went on all night , signified the long exile we Jews would face of many years ,and though we as a Jewish people would survive through this long painful Galus, we would still at times get hurt, just like Yaakov's Hip-Socket. In honor of this, Jews do not eat the 'Gid Ha Nashe,' the displaced sinew of the hip-socket.
Yaakov held on to the Angel and refused to let the angel go, till the Angel Blessed him, which would corroborate the Blessing taken from Eisav . Yaakov heard that his name would be Yisrael . Yaakov asked the Angel's Name and the Angel inquired why, for Angels don't always have direct names, for their names have to sometimes do with that specific mission the Angel may be sent on.
The Angel desperately wanted to go, for it was his turn to sing Shira to HaShem that very day-break, but Yaakov refused to let him go. So the Angel started to sing Shira from on Earth . The Angel eventually Blessed Yaakov Yisrael , for what is Blessed in Shamaim is Blessed here .
The Angel returned and Yaakov named the place "Peniel ," for Yaakov had seen a divine being , face to face .
Then Yaakov continued with his family, toward Eisav. Yaakov foresaw Eisav on the way to him . That is why Torah says , "Yaakov Raised his eyes and saw,"
So Yaakov went in front and separated his camp , putting Zilpah and Bilhah and their children behind him , then Leah and her children behind and Rachel further back , covered in front of her by her son Yosef .
Leah's daughter Dinah , Yaakov hid away from Eisav and our Rabbis say Yaakov should not have done that , for possibly , Dinah may have improved Eisav's character . It was this , say our Rabbonim , that caused the sad incident with Dinah later on in the Parsha, for seeing that Yaakov refused his daughter by hiding her from a member of the family, she ( the daughter ) ended up being taken by a complete stranger .
Yaakov and Eisav finally meet, and the Torah tells us how Yaakov bowed seven times . This bowing was not to Eisav at all, but to HaShem's Shechinah .
They ran toward each other and embraced and our Midrash tells us how Eisav tried to pretend friendliness to his brother Yaakov, yet tried different subtle ways to kill his brother .
Yaakov answered Eisav's question about all the children and livestock Yaakov now possessed , which gave Yaakov an opportunity to show how HaShem was with Yaakov and that HaShem Had Allowed Yaakov to Father the Tribes of Israel .
Yaakov had Eisav accept the gifts and slipped in, how Yaakov had overcome the divine being , the angel of Edom who , seeing the Angel was beaten, would thus Make Edom vulnerable .Yaakov refused politely not to take anything from his brother . They parted ways , Yaakov , refusing to go alongside his brother, saying he would at a later date, referring to Mashiach's Time , when we would overcome Amalek and those from Edom would try overcome us .Yaakov stayed in Succot and then on to Shechem .
It just so happened, that Shechem had set up a market place where the young females went out all dressed colorfully. Dinah, who was a bit like her Mother Leah, who also , as Torah says , ' Went out ,' , was attracted while out, with these foreign colorfully dressed women . This teaches us that Jewish men and women, should be very careful , never to go out of their Religious circle , and never to practice the practices of the land, lest they be enticed . While Dinah was out, she was seen by Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivvite , prince of the region. He took her,lay with her and violated her . He had feelings for her and asked his father to have Yaakov , allow him to take her for a wife .The Midrash tells us that Yaakov sent messengers to try retrieve his daughter, but they would not let her go .
Yaakov decided to keep silent and discuss it with his sons .
They were furious that a foreign man had defiled their sister, a maiden in Israel .They decided to answer the request for Shechem to want to marry her, with cleverness.
Shechem's father , said his nation could intermingle with ours and this, the sons of Yaakov would not have . The sons of Yaakov said that their sister cannot be given to an uncircumcized man , and that the father and son and all the menfolk would need to be circumcized . The father and son returned and persuaded almost all the inhabitants of the area , to go along with the circumcision, assuring them of the flocks and things Yaakov possessed.
Yet there was a man in the area called Chedkam and his six brothers, who refused to circumcize themselves, calling us and the idea an outrage and threatened to kill the prince and his Father if they don't kill us . So they agreed to try trap us . Dinah , managed to get word to her family that they were planning to annihilate us .The people and Chedkam and his six brothers were persuaded to circumcize themselves as an act and on the third day after the circumcision, when they were at their weakest, two of Yaakov's sons Shimon and Levi , who at the time were only thirteen years old, came upon the city and slew every male at the point of the sword , including Hamor and Shechem , took back their daughter Dinah and plundered the city . Yaakov came down on them for the danger they now caused to the family, for a few escaped to the Edomite kings in the area, who amassed a large army to attack Yaakov's family , but HaShem put fear into them and we were saved from harm . The daughter of Dinah and Shechem grew up and became close to Yosef and met each other later in Egypt , where they married .
Yaakov continued to question the hardships he was constantly having and HaShem Reminded him to go to Beth-El and keep his promise , for Yaakov had promised HaShem the tithe .
The family finally got to Beth-El , where Yaakov built an altar and fulfilled his word . It was there, that they buried the idols that had been taken and silver and gold, from Shechem and Hamor's people .
Yaakov again faced an attack against the family and even Yitzchak , his Father , sent help. Again Yaakov's family were surrounded, and according to the Midrash, Eisav again appeared to attack the family with his men . The Midrash tells us how Yaakov shot arrows at Eisav and how his sons defended their lives and with HaShem's help, with these enemies of ours also hearing that if only two of Yaakov's sons , who were only thirteen , could decimate a city, they feared what the whole of Yaakov's family would do to them, so one by one, thanks due only to HaShem , did these nations , nation by nation , with HaShem Putting a deadly fear on them, were forced to disperse and leave us be .Thank you HaShem .
Yaakov arrived at Luz in Canaan, and built an altar at Beth-El and called the place El-Beth-El . It was here that Devorah, the wet-nurse of Yaakov's Mother , passed away and Yaakov buried her in a place he called Allon-Bachuth . The reason that this is mentioned here, is that Devorah and Yaakov's Mother Rivka were so close, that on the day Devorah died, so did Yaakov's Mother Rivka . The reason this isn't mentioned openly in Torah, and only Devorah is mentioned for both, is that Rivka , before she passed away, knew Yaakov wasn't home , and didn't want to be buried by her son Eisav who was evil , with all the shame Eisav had brought to the family and what people would have said about her now ,having a child like Eisav , and so, she instructed that she be buried in the quiet of night . Yaakov mourned for the news of his Mother . HaShem Appeared to Yaakov and Blessed him and renamed Yaakov , Yisrael . Yaakov set up a monument where HaShem Had Spoken to him and poured oil upon it and called the place Beth-El .
They journeyed again and on the road to Ephrath, Rachel went into labor and sadly, while bearing a boy who she called "Ben Oni " ( Son of my mourning ) for she knew her soul was departing , and two girls , Rachel sadly passed away . But Yaakov renamed the boy 'Binyamin' ( Son of my right hand ). Rachel was thus not buried in the Cave of Machpela, but on the road to Ephrath. In Beis - lechem . For it would be in this spot much later in history which we would walk past ,when we went into exile in Bavel, that Rachel would pray to HaShem to forgive us , and she did pray for us then and so we were released after seventy years of Galus in Bavel .
Just after this , as Yaakov pitched his tent just after Migdal-Eder, and dwelt there , that Torah refers to an action of Yaakov's first born son Reuvein. There is a deeper happening here then appears . In each of the four wive's tents of Yaakov, was an extra couch , for the Shechinah of HaShem , Who would prophetically show Yaakov, to whom he should go, when he was helping make his family . When Yaakov's wife Rachel passed away, Reuvein thought that his Father would now make his more permanent place with his Mother Leah. But Yaakov did not do this.He moved his place to Bilhah's tent , closest to Rachel . This upset Reuvein, who felt his Mother deserved better respect and show of love, and so, Reuvein went and lay down on this couch , after he personally moved it into his Mother's Tent . This was akin to lying on it with Bilhah ( even though Reuvein never actually lay with his Father's wife Chas Ve Shalom , for this couch was put in Bilhah's Tent . We know that Reuvein didn't actively commit a sin of sleeping with his Father's wife, for straight after this , in Torah , HaShem Reminds us that "The Sons of Yaakov were twelve," ( Bereishis 35 : 22) , showing that all the sons (including Reuvein ) were of equal holiness to HaShem , which he would not have been Viewed that way by HaShem , had he slept with his Father's wife , Chas Ve Shalom . Also , Reuvein was one of the Tribes , that , when entering Eretz Yisroel , would have to stand on one of the mountains calling curse to anyone who would lay with his Father's wife, which he would not do, if he had done such a thing . No doubt though, he had still slighted his Father and most importantly the Shechinah of HaShem , on that couch and so, Reuvein lost the reward to the first-born right, to his brother Yoseif, which he totally understood . Reuvein, being a very holy and good fair man , never forgave himself for this and continued praying all the time, for repentance. Some say , there was no more a petitioned pleading for forgiveness from anyone, than Reuvein kept asking for.
Yaakov finally arrived home and greeted his Father , and a few years later, when Yosef was seventeen, Yitzchak passed away at the age of one hundred and eighty years . Yaakov and Eisav came to bury him . When it came to dividing between the sons, Yaakov offered Eisav all the physical wealth , if Eisav would agree to the deed of Caanan and the Cave of Machpeilah, going to Yaakov's family . Eisav, not sure of which to choose, went and asked advice of Yishmael's son, who advised him to take the wealth . Thus Yaakov, secured Eretz Yisroel ( Canaan ) and the Cave of Machpelah for us, his children .
The Parsha ends with the descendants of Eisav . The reason for this, is to show the contrast of the holy ideals of Yaakov as appose to the evil and vile impure line of Eisav, where many of Eisav's progeny in this list , committed incest and murder , having children with family members and killing leaders in the line .It is in this progeny, that we see a child of impure birth , in Amalek, the son of Eliphaz , the son of Eisav . It is this Amalek, who became the greatest enemy of us Jews, bringing people like Haman and Agag. , and other terrible enemies through time .
Also, Chiefs in Eisav's progeny didn't last all that long as other members of his family murdered them .
Certainly quite the opposite of holy Yaakov and his progeny, that serves HaShem .
So ends the Parsha .
This Parsha as I mentioned is called " Vayishlach " - " Sent " and refers to Yaakov sending Messengers / Angels to Eisav. The very fact that Yaakov was able to command Angels, shows his utter holiness and closeness with HaShem's Will . Yaakov, spent his entire life serving HaShem and his family and progeny. Whatever he did, was for the sake of his Children and us .He Cared solely for HaShem and His Jewish family for survival .
To Command Angels, is not an action of power, but of humility and Righteous Holiness , for Malachim - Angels are in the Command of HaShem . To have Command of Angles, as Avraham did, shows that HaShem Has Chosen to stand side - by - side with this person . That takes of the person real holiness .
But there is another deep meaning here that I perceive in this word ' Vayishlach ."
At times , when a Hebrew Letter Yud is placed in front of the word, it shows the future tense 'He/he .' Thus the word "Vayishlach ," can , according to my opinion , be rendered , ' And He/he Will send .' Who could this ' He/he ' be referring to , in the future tense . It could be referring to HaShem Himself , Who will , in the future times at the End of Days , send his Messengers to Eisav , to wipe out Amalek within them .Thus HaShem Could be Hinting here in this very verse what the future will be, that HaShem Will destroy our enemies in the Future and let us live in peace and harmony under The One and Holy HaShem . Thus it could be a future prophecy of the End Of Days . We can see this as a prophecy too for Moshiach's time , for if we take the word 'Yishalach,' within the Word " Vayishlach , " in Gematriah , it comes to 10+300+30+8 = 348 and 3+4+8 = 15 and 1+ 5 = 6 , which is the number just before Moshiach ( seven in Gematriah ) and thus just before Mashiach, HaShem Will want to wipe out Amalek once and for all, including its Angel .
In the same way, This 'he' could also refer to Yaakov and his descendants, for Yaakov may spiritually return in the removal of Amalek and at the End of Days , when Amalek is wiped out .
HaShem , Always Keeps His Word . HaShem Will Wipe out our enemies at the End of Days , sending many Messengers Malachim Angels , to clear up this World once and for all , At The End Of Days .
The word ' Send' is an active word , and also helps in the fighting of the Yetzer Horah we all have . For , if the Yetzer Horah wants to catch us, this Parsha and word can each us , to not even think for a moment about what it is enticing us to do . We are instantly to 'Send out ' the Yetzer Horah from us before we even start listening to it .For once one starts listening, it is much harder to send it away . Also , we learn that we are to , every day , act as HaShem's Messengers, being sent out On Behalf of HaShem , to bring the World and its inhabitants to HaShem and His Commandments . There is no sweeter task in this World HaShem Gave us , then to be Emissaries , Messengers for HaShem Himself , to walk as we could in Gan Eiden , alongside our Creator in Love and in Light and in His Holy Purpose .
So may the End of Days Come , when Creation finally reaches its destination and from the time HaShem Sent Adam Ve Chava out into the World to make the World Holy and conquer the Yetzer Horah , may HaShem Finally Help us return to sit close to Him in sweetness and love , after accompanying His " Vayishlach " - " Sending ," when we can all come home to Him with love .
I wish HaShem With Love , A Most Beautiful Shabbos Kodesh with Love , and to all my fellow Yidden , a most beautiful Shabbos Kodesh with love .
