Our Parsha this Shabbos is Parashas Chayei Sarah. In this Parsha, our beloved Sarah passes on as does Avraham at the end of the Parsha.
In this Parsha, also, Avraham sends his faithful Eliezer to find a wife for his son Yitzchak.Eliezer,a man of kindness chooses a test of sweetness of Chessed and Kindness to see who would be the woman that will be worthy of Yitzchak and Rivka , shows she is the one , for she shows great Chessed in offering Eliezer and all his Camels water, quite a task , for she continues up and down to bring each Camel water till they have had their fill- quite a feat as Camels drink and store a lot of water.
Our Parsha starts with , as I said , the passing of Sarah, just after the Akeidah..
Though it is the passing of Sarah, the Parsha is called 'Chayei Sarah,' - 'The Life of Sarah.' Strange to talk about it as the life of Sarah, when it is her passing.
In these words, HaShem shows the true meaning of an Eishes Chayil, a woman of valor as Shlomo Ha Melech put it.
Sarah lived the years of her life serving HaShem helping to promote HaShem's Oneness.
Thus Sarah truly 'Lived.'A holy soul like this continues to spiritually grow and live after the physical time to move on has come and it is as though Sarah continues to live on through her Jewish people.
The Parsha puts it as 'Sarah's lifetime was one hundred years and twenty years and seven years , the years of Sarah's life.'
The Torah splits these years like this for a reason , for our Sages say ,that at a hundred, she was as sinless as she was when she was twenty years and at twenty years, she was as beautifully innocent and pure as a seven year old who is as though she never committed sins by that age.
This is a true reflection of Sarah.A woman who was never tainted by the outside world , but remained pure and holy with Tznius.
The Sedra says she passed away in Kiriat Arba , a name which meant the 'City of the Four,' in reference to the four giants that lived there and as Rashi says, prophetically because of the four holy couples who would rest there ,Adam and Chava, Avraham and Sarah, Yitzchak and Rivka and Yaakov and Leah.
While Avraham had gone to offer his son, Satan came to point this out to Sarah, and we are told that she passed away from the shock. Not that Satan was evil, but it was just her time and her holiness had to be diverted that she might move on to her next spiritual stage.
Avraham then returns to find his beloved wife had passed and mourns her and seeks to buy a burial plot for her from Ephron the Hittite .
Why did Avraham want this specific Cave of Machpelah in Chevron as a burial site? Our Midrash tells us that before this, when Avraham was welcoming the three angels before and was trying to prepare the bullock , which ran away and ran into this Cave,it was when Avraham followed it into this cave that he smelled the sweet fragrance of Gan Eiden for The Cave of Machpelah was just that, an entry into Gan Eiden. This Cave being the place where Adam and Chava were buried standing up.For this reason, Avraham sought this cave and purchased it and sealed it as Jewish owned, till eternity.
Sarah, was missed by all.Her departed holiness was felt throughout. In fact, the candles in her tent extinguished after her passing and only returned at the coming of Rivka who became wife to her son Yitzchak.
The true value of a Woman is beyond imagination. She can bring HaShem's Shechinah into the home like Sarah did. Even today, many men of the World take women for granted , making them out to be lower than them. How wrong they are.
That is not the role of a Woman.
HaShem tells us in the beginning, when HaShem Made Chava for Adam, that she would be a Help-mate to him and an 'Eizer K'Negdo,' - 'A Help-mate Corresponding to him.'These words actually are also literally,' A Help-mate Opposite to him.' In other words,a help-mate that is on his level and not below him, and one that is 'opposite to him' when he is wrong,to teach him, thus she is his help-mate as he is hers, helping to correct each other when necessary, so that they can help to bring each other up spiritually in level and so that they can help each other work to bettering each other so as to help each other grow up toward HaShem.
A Man , who rather chooses to put down a Woman and think he is superior and who thinks he knows it all, is losing a golden opportunity that HaShem Gave him as a Gift, to Grow.
A Woman is to be treated with care and love and tenderness and never to ever be abused.
A Woman is never to be dishonored and a Woman is never to be physically or emotionally abused in any way.
A Woman is never there for the man's convenience, but they are to be there for each other to help each other grow in righteousness toward HaShem.
A Woman must be looked upon like a Star, so high in the Heavens, looked up to and admired , with a feeling of respect that she is high up and never to be taken advantage of or taken for granted but to be looked upon that she is partly unreachable and uniquely special and thus a man must always keep for her a feeling of such respect that keeps him from ever getting to take advantage of her or taking her for granted ,but he must rather look up to her as the Shiny Star in is life ,never to become a habit but always to be appreciated and thus his Help-mate to G-D in Heaven.
A woman is to be realized for the holy being she is.
Our Kabbalah says that HaShem Counts the Tears of Women. In other words, a Woman understands the Spirituality of the World's Birth better and understands better what it is to bring life into this World, as she is the one who gives birth. She thus has a deeper understanding than a man does,of HaShem in this way , as HaShem Brings life, and so she has a type of closeness to HaShem that a Man does not have in this way and so HaShem and Women can relate to the pains that the World can cause in ways that Men can't relate to and so HaShem Counts the Tears of Women.
A Woman is not an ornament , but a highly spiritually intelligent Creation and most certainly a Gift from HaShem, to their partner, so that their partner can be helped to grow up toward HaShem.
All these things , was Sarah.A precious gift to Avraham and certainly a precious and holy soul on her own as he was her gift too.Couples are an equal gift to each other.
Such is the true value of a Pure and Holy Woman.
And such is the much needed lesson to many Men of today, that a Woman is his sweet light to be loved and cared for and ever truly respected and honored as an equal , and looked up to , as a path to HaShem.
With Love to HaShem, I wish HaShem with Love, a Special and Sweet Beautiful Shabbos Kodesh with Love and to all, a special, sweet and beautiful Shabbos Kodesh with love.
